Where, then, do these temptations come from?

James 1:13-14: “For God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.” We see in James 1:14, that temptation originates in us as well. We are tempted when we are “carried away and enticed by our own lust.

How can I overcome temptation?

1 Cor 10:13: says, “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man.”

Hebrews 4:15: says, “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin”.

How then do we resist the temptations?

Matthew 4:1-11 – Jesus shows the way – “Word of God and Holy Spirit”

Romans 12:1-2 – Renew your mind – “remember you are Sons of God”

Luke 11:4 – pray lead me not into temptation – “Prayer works”

Ephesians 6:17-18 – Use your weapon of warfare – “The Word of God”

Colossians 3:2-3 – Set your mind of the things of God – “Make it spiritual”

Proverbs 4:14-15 – Turn away with determination – “make up your mind”

Matthew 5:29-30 – Take drastic action – “it’s a matter of life or death”

Gal 5:16-26 – Live and be led by the Holy Spirit – “change occurs through time”

What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of Man – John 5:22-30

A first meaning of the phrase “Son of Man” is as a reference to the prophecy of Daniel 7:13-14.

The description “Son of Man” was a Messianic title. Jesus is the One who was given dominion and glory and a kingdom. Jesus was proclaiming Himself as the Messiah.

A second meaning of the phrase “Son of Man” is that Jesus was truly a human being. God called the prophet Ezekiel “son of man” 93 times. God was simply calling Ezekiel a human being. A son of a man is a man.

Jesus is referred to as the “Son of Man” 88 times in the New Testament.

Jesus was fully God (John 1:1), but He was also a human being (John 1:14).

Jesus was the Son of God—He was in His essence God. Jesus was also the Son of Man—He was in His essence a human being. In summary, the phrase “Son of Man” indicates that Jesus is the Messiah and that He is truly a human being.

What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of God – Luke 1:34-38 & John 1:43-51

Jesus is not God’s Son in the sense of a human father and a son. God did not get married and have a son. God did not mate with Mary and, together with her, produce a son. Jesus is God’s Son in the sense that He is God made manifest in human form (John 1:1, 14).

Jesus is God’s Son in that He was conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:35 declares, “The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.’”

Hebrews 1:3 states – “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being”

The Son of God represents equality with God. He is God in the Flesh.

Christ was the Son of God before his incarnation, and that his claim to this title is a claim of equality with God – Rom. 1:3; Gal. 4:4; John 1:1–14; John 5:18–25; John 10:30–38

Summary of John 20 & 21 – The Resurrection of Christ

Chapter 20 records three post-resurrection appearances of Christ and proclamation of Jesus’ victory over death. Each appearance brought about a different result in the lives of those involved.

Chapter 21 reveals how Jesus reinstated Peter after his great fall and provides clarity about the Lord’s return.

John 20:1-31 – The Resurrection of Christ

The empty tomb – John 20:1-10

John commented in v9 that even after a long period of teaching by Jesus the disciples still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead (Psalms 110:1, 4; Isa. 53:11-12).

Christ appeared before Mary Magdalene – John 20:11-18

Jesus may have introduced Himself to Mary first because she had so earnestly sought Him. She was at the cross while He was dying (John 19:25), and she went to His tomb early on Sunday morning (20:1).

Christ appeared before the Disciples (Thomas not present) – John 20:19-25

Forgiveness of sins is one of the major benefits of the death of Jesus. It is the essence of the New Covenant (Matt. 26:28; Jer. 31:31-34).

Christ appeared before Disciples (Thomas present) – John 20:26-29

Thomas’ response is “My Lord and My God”. Here was a skeptical man, confronted by the evidence of Jesus’ resurrection. He announced that Jesus, the Man of Galilee, is God manifest in the flesh.

The purpose of the Gospel – John 20:30-31

The significance of the Resurrection

Demonstrated that what Jesus predicted about His being raised was true (Mark 8:31; John 9:9, 31; John 10:34; John 2:19),

Proved that Jesus is the Son of God (Rom. 1:4) and was sent by God 1 Tim. 3:16

Testified to the success of His mission of salvation (Rom. 4:25)

Entitled Jesus to a position of glory (1 Peter 1:11)

Proclaimed that Jesus is the “Lord” (Acts 2:36).

John 21:1-25 – Christ appears before others and the second chance for Peter

There is a vast difference between Sonship (being saved) and discipleship (following the Lord). Not all Christians are disciples. When Peter sinned (denied), he did not lose his Sonship, but he did fall away from his discipleship. For this reason Christ repeated His call, “Follow Me.”

Application: Follow Jesus, Hebrews 12:1-2.

Summary of John 18 & 19 – The Garden and the Cross

Man will do his worst, and God will respond with His very best.

Romans 5:20 – “But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound”.

John 18:1-27 – Guilt & Grace in the Garden

The Garden – Obedience – John 18:1

Jesus fully knew what lay before Him, yet He went to the Garden in obedience to the Father’s will. He left eight of the men near the entrance, and took Peter, James, and John and went to another part of the Garden to pray (Matt. 26:36–46; Mark 14:32–42).

Application: Don’t fail your Gethsemane experience!!

The Kiss – Treachery – John 18:2-9

Judas’ kiss, which was given repeatedly to the Lord, was certainly one of the basest acts of treachery recorded anywhere in sacred or secular history. In that day, a kiss was a sign of affection and devotion. It was a sign of devotion and obedience. But Judas was not truly a disciple of Jesus Christ, though he belonged to the disciple band. In the Garden, Judas stood with the enemy, not with Jesus’ friends! When people today pretend to know and love the Lord, they are committing the sin of Judas.

Application: Be careful of those who pretend and eagerly seek to befriend you.

The Sword – Rebellion – John 18:10

It is a sad thing when well-meaning but ignorant Christians take up the sword to “defend” the Lord Jesus Christ. Peter hurt Malchus, something no believer should do.

Application: Don’t hurt the testimony of Christ by your out of control action.

The Cup – Submission – John 18:11-14

Jewish law demanded that witnesses be called before a prisoner was questioned. Annas defied this law, and eventually the council hired false witnesses. Jesus knew His rights, but He did not insist on them.

Application: Some times you will suffer for His glory. (1 Peter 2:19–25; 4:12–19).

The Fire – Denial – John 18:15-27

Jesus was gracious! Jesus was fully conscious that Judas was betraying Him. He went into the Garden of Gethsemane surrendered to the Father’s will. He healed Malchus’ ear and protected His disciples.

Application: He yielded Himself into the hands of sinners that He might suffer and die for us. What is in your hand today—the sword, or the cup?

John 18:28 thru 19:16 – Suffered under Pontius Pilate

1) What is the accusation? – John 18:28-32 – trail before Pilate

Jewish religious leaders were probing for any piece of evidence they could find on which they could build a case; and they were even willing to secure false witnesses.

Application: Some accusers will make up lies about your character and integrity.

2) Are you the King of the Jews? – John 18:33-38

Between John 18:38 and 39 you have the events recorded in Luke 23:6–12. Pilate’s maneuver did not solve his problem, because Herod sent Jesus back! All that it accomplished was the healing of the breach between these two rulers. Pilate still had to deal with Jesus and the Jews.

Application: Everybody has to deal with the implications of Jesus – you can’t pass the decision.

3) Shall I release the King of Jews? – John 18:39 thru 19:7

The religious leaders reply: “We have a law, and by our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God” (John 19:7).

Application: Jesus the Christ is the Son of God, without doubt – John 20:31).

4) Where are you from? – John 19:8-16

When Israel asked to have a king, and God gave them Saul, the nation rejected God the Father (1 Sam. 8:5–7). When they asked for Barabbas, they rejected God the Son. Today, they are rejecting the pleading of God the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51; Rom. 10:21). Yet there will come a day when they shall see their King, believe, and be saved (Zech. 12:10–11; Matt. 24:30; Rev. 1:7). Both the nation and the governor were on trial, and both failed miserably.

Application: Don’t fail your test of faith – trust Jesus the Christ as the Son of God and Lord.

John 19-17 thru 19:42 – The Death of the Cross

5) The Crucifixion of Christ – John 19:17-27

Do not confuse Mary Magdalene with the “sinful woman” described in Luke 7:36. Jesus had delivered Mary Magdalene from demons (Mark 16:9), and she used her resources to assist Jesus in His ministry.

Application: Never forget the suffering of the crucifixion for it’s the bridge to eternal life.

6) Dead – John 19:28-30

His death was voluntary: He willingly dismissed His spirit (John 19:30; 10:17–18). He “gave Himself” (Gal. 2:20). He offered Himself as a ransom (Mark 10:45), as a sacrifice to God (Eph. 5:2), and as a propitiation for sin (1 John 2:2).

Application: Jesus Christ death on the cross gives all that believe by faith eternal life and peace with God.

7) Buried – John 19:31-42

The Sabbath was about to dawn. Jesus had finished the work of the “new creation” (2 Cor. 5:17).

Application: God loves you – the plan of salvation is for you!!!!

Lesson #19– The Gospel of John

View message below or download the entire message by clicking here: Gospel of John – Lesson #19

John 16 – Power of the Spirit

The disciples could not understand why Christ had to leave them, so He showed them that His return to the Father made possible greater blessings because of the coming of the Spirit.

Our Lord described how the Spirit works through the Believer.

The Spirit (Helper) convicts world (16:8-11) – in three areas

Sin – The sin that condemns the soul is unbelief, the rejection of Christ (John 3:18–21). This is the sin of unbelief in the Son of God.

Righteousness – The Spirit’s presence in the world is proof of the righteousness of Christ, who is now returned to the Father. While on earth, Christ was accused of being a lawbreaker and a sinner, as well as a counterfeit. But the fact that the Spirit is present on earth is proof that the Father raised the Son and received Him back to heaven.

Judgment – Christ is speaking here of the past judgment at the cross, not a future judgment. He had spoken of judging Satan and the world (John 12:31–32; Col. 2:15). The presence of the Spirit in the world is evidence that Satan has been judged and defeated; otherwise Satan would be controlling this world.

The Spirit instructs Christians (16:12-15) – teach the truth of the Word of God – John 14:26, John 15:26

The Spirit encourages the Christian (16:16-22) – V16 – There is a twofold meaning here. First, they would “see Him again” after His resurrection from the dead; but they would also “see Him” when the Spirit came to dwell with them. They would exchange physical sight for spiritual insight.

The Spirit helps the Christian pray (16:22-33) – The power of prayer – Prayer is a tremendous privilege!

As the believer allows the Spirit to teach him the Word, he grows in his prayer life, for prayer and the Word go together. Consider John 14:13-14, John 15:7 and John 15:16

Jude 20 commands us to “pray in the Holy Ghost.” Too much praying today is in the flesh, asking for things that are not in the will of God (James 4:1–10).

Allow the Holy Spirit to burden us with prayer requests (Rom. 9:1–3). The Spirit knows the mind of the Father and can lead us to pray for those things God wants to give us.

Reflection points:

The Spirit uses witnessing Christians and the Word to convince the unbeliever of his sin of unbelief; of his need for righteousness.

There is no salvation without Spirit-led conviction, for the Spirit uses the Word to convict lost souls.

The Christian life cannot be lived in the power of the flesh; rather we need the Spirit of God if we are going to live lives that glorify Christ.

John 17 – Power of Prayer

We have the privilege of hearing the Son conversing/praying with the Father.

Christ Prays for Himself (17:1-5)

Christ prays that the Father will give Him again the glory He laid aside when He came to earth to die for the sin of the world (Phil. 2:1–12).

In v2 – (1) The Father has given the Son authority over all mankind; (2) the Son gives eternal life to (3) those the Father has given the Son.

Christ Prays for Disciples (17:6-19)

“I have manifested Thy name” (v. 6)—this statement should be related to the “I AM” statements of Christ in John’s Gospel. God’s name is I AM (Ex. 3:13–14), and Christ reveals that God is to us whatever we need Him to be.

The key thought here is sanctification, that is, the disciples’ relationship to the world. Jesus said, “I have given them Your word” (v. 14, NKJV), and in v. 17 He states that we are sanctified—set apart for God—through the Word. Sanctification does not mean sinless perfection.

Christ Prays for the Church (17:20-26)

The main theme here is glorification; “I have given them the glory that you gave me” (v. 22). This is another proof of the eternal security of the believer: we are already glorified as far as God is concerned. Christ prays that we might be with Him and see His glory.

Colossians 3:4 states that we will share His glory; Rom. 8:18 promises we will show forth His glory.

Christ also prays for the unity of His church (v. 21).

What is the difference between unity (oneness of heart and spirit) and uniformity (everybody exactly alike)?

Reflection points:

Believers are God’s love gift to the Son- (John 6:37).

A sanctified Christian is someone who is daily growing in the Word and as a result is separated more and more from the world unto the Father.

While Christians belong to different denominations, they are all part of the true church, the body of Christ; it is this spiritual unity in love that convinces the world of the truth of the Gospel.

It is possible for Christians to differ on minor matters and still love one another in Christ.

John 15

Jesus identifies himself as the “true vine” and the Father as the “vinedresser” or caretaker of the vine

Vine has two types of vines:

Branches that bear fruit are genuine believers

Branches that do not bear fruit are those that profess to believe, but their lack of fruit indicates genuine salvation has never taken place and they have no life from the vine.

“I am the true vine” – seventh claim of deity by Jesus – life comes from the true vine which is Jesus

“He takes away” – The father rids dead wood so that living, fruit bearing branches may grow.

God removes all things in the believer’s life that hinder fruit bearing.

God cuts away sin from the believers spiritual life – The Discipline of God – Heb 12:3-11

“Abide I me” – remain or stay with commitment and obedience to the Father

The fruit of salvation is continuance in service to Jesus and in His teaching – Col 1:23

Abiding – Be Faithful – Endure hardship for the glory of God

“I Chose you” – God chooses based on His sovereign choice

God chose Israel – Isa 45:4 – not based on merit

God elected believers to salvation apart from any merit – Romans 8:29-33, Eph 1:3-6, Col 3:12

What is fruit? – spiritual fruit the works for kingdom purposes

Spiritual attitudes that characterize a Spirit-led Believer – Gal 5:22-23

Righteous behavior and actions – Phil 1:9-11

Praise of God – Hebrews 13:15-16

Leading others to Christ – Romans 1:13-16
