Book of Hebrews

Christology is the central focus – two titles emphasized Son of God and High Priest.

Warnings for all Believers

Heb. 2:1–4 – First warning – Drifting from the truth

• Dare not ignore the message of a great salvation
• Announced by the Lord Himself and confirmed by Spirit-given signs

Heb. 3:7 thru 4:11 – Second Warning – Disbelieving the voice of God

• Warn of the consequences of unbelieving and unfaithfulness.
• Causes of disbelief – sin, exposure to un-truths, doubt, fear

Heb. 5:11 thru 6:20 – Third Warning – Desertion from elementary principles of Christ

• Be fully committed to Christ and grow to maturity to teach others
• Repetition and refocus on the meaning of the Gospel

Heb. 10:26-39 – Fourth warning – Despising the knowledge of the truth

• Be aware of the sin of apostasy – falling away or defection from truth and opening yourself to false teaching and untruth.

Heb. 12:15-17 – Fifth warning – Devaluing the grace of God

• Watch your lives in order to give a testimony of peace and holiness, as well be willing to help those in need of salvation. Don’t forget about the grace you received.

Heb. 12:25-29 – Sixth Warning – Departing from Him who speaks

• Warn of the consequences of unbelief of God’s law and consequences of rejecting salvation through Jesus Christ.

Strategies to address the six warnings are:

• Authentic and regular participation in worship
• Study the scriptures and hear others teach the scriptures
• Earnest prayer with spiritual and self reflection
• Fellowship with other Christians – meaningful and purposeful

Christian – Temptation and Victory!!!

Scripture: Matt 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13 and Mark 1:12-13

Why do we face temptations?

• God created (Adam & Eve) and Satan has been tempting since – Genesis 3
• Temptation is great after public declaration of faith – Matt 3:13-17
• Ongoing temptations of Jesus by Satan: Matt 16:21-23 and Luke 22:39-44, all without sin.
• During important seasons of our life: similar to Moses in Exodus 34:28 and Elijah in 1 Kings 19:8
• God provides “test” and/or “trail” to mature you or stimulate spiritual growth
• Satan the deceiver evokes temptations to motivate you to choose to sin
• God does not “tempt” the Believer to sin: that is always the work of Satan…

What are the patterns of temptations?

• Lusts of the flesh – Matt 4:3-4 – deny reliance on God – do it yourself – reply Deut 8:3
• Pride of life – Matt 4:5-7 – seek to abuse power and authority – reply Deut 6:16

• Lusts of the eyes – Matt 4:8-10 – the desire to instant fame – take easy way  – reply Deut 6:13

Christians struggle with the temptation to sin? And we have help!!

• Struggle with sin – Romans 3:23
• Ongoing struggle – Romans 7:18-20
• The plea for help – Romans 7:24
• Ongoing victory through Jesus Christ our Lord – Romans 7:25
• The Lord is near to those who call on him – Psalms 145:18 and Psalms 46:1

What we learned?

• Resist and respond to temptations with scripture and prayer
• Watch and prayer for the common temptations
• Saturate our hearts and minds to resist – lust of flesh, pride of life and lust of the eye
• God will provide a way out – 1 Cor 10:12-13
• During testing and trail aided by angels who are ministering spirits: Hebrews 1:14
• The tempter is coming back and don’t allow him to meet the same person at the last temptation

What does this say about the work on Cavalry?

• Hebrews 2:14-18 and Hebrews 4:15-16
• Our Lord’s human nature enables Him to sympathize with our own weaknesses
• We have a High Priest to intercede on our behalf and provide the grace of forgiveness.
• Salvation, Sanctification, Deliverance and Eternal Security through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Hebrews 3:1-2

“Partakers of Heavenly calling” – the Body of Christ

• Ephesians 3:20 – “members of his body, flesh and of His bones”
• Hebrews 6:4 – “partakers of the Holy Spirit”
• Romans 8”9 – “Now if any man has not the Spirit of Christ, He is none of His”
• Hebrews 12:8 – “Partakers in God’s love chastening”

“High Priest of our confession, Jesus Christ”

• Moses sent and commissioned by God – Christ sent as God’s “Last word” to sinful man
• John 3:17, John 5:36 and John 6:29 – sent from God and revealed to humanity

Hebrews 3:3-6

“Christ as a Son over his own house”

• Moses ministered to Israel, the people of God under Old Covenant (the law)
• Christ ministers to His church, His people under the New covenant (thru grace)
• Moses spoke of things to come and Christ is the fulfillment of those things
• Moses spoke of grace to come and Christ brought forth the Gospel of grace

“Hold fast the confidence”

• Speak with confidence and boldness – Hebrews 4:12
• Enter his presence – Hebrews 10:19
• Be steadfast, confident with joyful hope

Hebrews 3:7 thru 4:13

• Rest in the Lord with confidence – Salvation, Sanctification, Eternal Life
• Peace with God – Romans 5:1 and Peace of God – Phil 4:6-8

Fruitful Growth in the Faith – 2 Peter 1:3-11

• Add these seven characteristics to the saving faith of Jesus Christ

1. Virtue – moral quality – good character
2. Knowledge – spiritual understanding – live the life
3. Self control – alert discipline – be careful of surroundings
4. Perseverance – patience and endurance – don’t easily give up
5. Godliness – devout practice to worship and devoted life – hoilness
6. Brotherly kindness – approachable and engaging -  be friendly to the friendless
7. Love – agape love – unconditional love to and for others

If we say we never sin since Salvation we deceive ourselves – 1 John 1:8-10, but “HWPF” are weapons of the Christian Believers warfare.

Weapons of Warfare to overcome sin: (“HWPF”)

• The Holy Spirit – “H”
• Gal 5:16-25 – Fruit of the Spirit – walk in the Spirit – He prompts the Believer
• Do not quench the Spirits promptings – 1 Thessalonians 5:19
• Be filled with the Spirit – Ephesians 5:18-21

• The Word of God – “W”
• Equip us for every good work – 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – teaches you how to live
• Living and powerful – Hebrews 4:12 – “gets to the heart of the matter”
• Meditate on it day and night – Psalms 119 – “you are what you eat”
• Word and Spirit – weapons of warfare – Ephesians 6:12-18

• Prayer – “P”
• Prayer meetings – Acts 3:1, Acts 4:31 – common focus
• Wonderful promises concerning prayer – Matt 7:7-11
• Persistent – Luke 18:1-8
• Watch and Pray – Matt 26:41 – keeps you from temptation
• Confidence – 1 John 5:14-15

• Fellowship with other Believers – “F”
• Often, consistent and necessary – Hebrews 10:24
• Covenant partner – James 5:16
• Growth inspires growth – Proverbs 27:17
• Friend a real friend – Ecclesiastes 4:11-12

Concluding thoughts:

• Temptations and sin common to all – 1 Corinthians 10:13
• Seek accountability and covenant partner(s)
• Over time progressive transformation and radical transformation are possible
• Seek to be like Christ in deed, interaction, discussion and all facets of life
• “HWPF” works if you work it.

Matt 6:9 – “Our Father which art in Heaven”

• Galatians 4:6-7 – Because you are Sons call out “Abba, Father”.
• 1 Peter 1:22-23 – Christians are the real thing – not of perishable seed – but imperishable.
• Ephesians 3:14-21 – God is sovereign – kneel before the Father…

Matt 6:9 – “Hallowed be thy name”

• Proverbs 18:10 – The name the Lord is a strong tower – run to it and be safe.
• Romans 10:11-13 – Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

• Luke 17:21 – The kingdom of God is within you – be confident in Jesus Christ.

Matt 6:12 – “And lead us not into temptation”

• Ephesians 6:11-17 – Full protection – defense and offense – be ready.
• 2 Thes 3:1-5 – The Lord is faithful – he will strengthen and protect you.

Matt 6:13 – “Deliver us from evil”

• Ephesians 6:10 – Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
• Psalms 145:10-13 – everlasting power – endures through all generations.

Benediction

• Acts 2:42 – Devote yourselves to the sound teaching, fellowship and prayer.
• Acts 6:1-7 – Give continually to prayer and the word.
• Deut 4:1-14 – God commands obedience –  be confident in Christ Jesus.

Where, then, do these temptations come from?

• James 1:13-14: “For God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.” We see in James 1:14, that temptation originates in us as well. We are tempted when we are “carried away and enticed by our own lust.

How can I overcome temptation?

• 1 Cor 10:13: says, “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man.”

• Hebrews 4:15: says, “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin”.

How then do we resist the temptations?

• Matthew 4:1-11 – Jesus shows the way – “Word of God and Holy Spirit”

• Romans 12:1-2 – Renew your mind – “remember you are Sons of God”

• Luke 11:4 – pray lead me not into temptation – “Prayer works”

• Ephesians 6:17-18 – Use your weapon of warfare – “The Word of God”

• Colossians 3:2-3 – Set your mind of the things of God – “Make it spiritual”

• Proverbs 4:14-15 – Turn away with determination – “make up your mind”

• Matthew 5:29-30 – Take drastic action – “it’s a matter of life or death”

• Gal 5:16-26 – Live and be led by the Holy Spirit – “change occurs through time”

What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of Man – John 5:22-30

• A first meaning of the phrase “Son of Man” is as a reference to the prophecy of Daniel 7:13-14.

• The description “Son of Man” was a Messianic title. Jesus is the One who was given dominion and glory and a kingdom. Jesus was proclaiming Himself as the Messiah.

• A second meaning of the phrase “Son of Man” is that Jesus was truly a human being. God called the prophet Ezekiel “son of man” 93 times. God was simply calling Ezekiel a human being. A son of a man is a man.

• Jesus is referred to as the “Son of Man” 88 times in the New Testament.

• Jesus was fully God (John 1:1), but He was also a human being (John 1:14).

• Jesus was the Son of God—He was in His essence God. Jesus was also the Son of Man—He was in His essence a human being. In summary, the phrase “Son of Man” indicates that Jesus is the Messiah and that He is truly a human being.

What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of God – Luke 1:34-38 & John 1:43-51

• Jesus is not God’s Son in the sense of a human father and a son. God did not get married and have a son. God did not mate with Mary and, together with her, produce a son. Jesus is God’s Son in the sense that He is God made manifest in human form (John 1:1, 14).

• Jesus is God’s Son in that He was conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:35 declares, “The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.’”

• Hebrews 1:3 states – “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being”

• The Son of God represents equality with God. He is God in the Flesh.

• Christ was the Son of God before his incarnation, and that his claim to this title is a claim of equality with God – Rom. 1:3; Gal. 4:4; John 1:1–14; John 5:18–25; John 10:30–38
